Factory Division FAQ and Clarification

The following aims to provide clarity regarding allowed rifles and accessories for Factory Division.

The Factory Division was designed for mainstream rifle manufacturers, and pits manufacturers products against each other on a level playing field. The rifle was broken down into 3 primary components, namely; the Action, the Chassis/Stock and the Trigger. By focusing on these components, the rifle systems can be directly compared.

Athletes are required to compete with the rifle as it comes from the factory, with little to no modification to the rifle system.

From the Rulebook

  1. Precision Rifle Divisions
    1. Centerfire Divisions
      1. FACTORY DIVISION
The Factory Division was designed for mainstream rifle manufacturers, and pits manufacturers products against each other on a level playing field.
Athletes are require to compete with the rifle as it comes from the factory, with little to no modification to the rifle system.
      2. A Factory Division Rifle is a non-custom, standard stock rifle, manufactured/assembled by a single mainstream manufacturer, in a configuration as available by that manufacturer at the time of production.
        1. The action, chassis/stock and trigger must be manufactured by, or be proprietary to that manufacturer, or be a generic part.
      3. Magazine may not contain more than 10 rounds at the start signal of a stage.
      4. A bipod may be attached to the rifle.
      5. A tripod may be attached to the rifle only after the COF start signal.
      6. Allowed modifications:
        1. The barrel may be replaced, as long as the replacement barrel is the same profile, caliber and length as available in that model from the manufacturer.
        2. The barrel may be re-crowned and / or threaded.
        3. The action may be bedded to the chassis or stock; however, the chassis or stock may not be altered for better fit.
      7. A suppressor, muzzle brake or barrel tuner may be fitted.
      8. Minor detailing is permitted, including:
        1. Removal of factory burrs,
        2. Polishing,
        3. Painting,
        4. Adding of grip or protective tape.
      9. Prohibited Modifications:
        1. No permanent alterations may be made to the rifle.
        2. No additional parts may be added to, or swapped on, the rifle.
        3. No further gunsmith modifications or truing are permitted.
      10. Should any parts or components break, then they must be replaced by the same factory parts or components.

The bottom line with the Factory Division is:
If you are thinking of ways to get around the Factory Division rules, then Open Division is most likely a better fit for you.

Minor Clarifications / Amendments

4.15.1: Minor accessories such as dope card holders, bubble levels, suppressor covers, slings and cosine indicators may be attached to the provided points/interfaces on the rifle.
No accessory that changes the fundamental ergonomics of the rifle may be added.
ie. machining a bubble level into a weight kit will not make the weight kit legal.

Example Questions and Scenarios

Can I add weights to my rifle ?
If the weights were included in the rifle model as standard, then Yes.
If the weights were purchased with the rifle as extra parts then No.

Several picatinney rail sections were included with my rifle when I bought it. Can I attached them ?
Yes, if they were included with the rifle as standard accessories from the factory, then you may attach them to the standard points provided on the rifle.

My rifle does not have a picatinney or arca rail. Can I add a rail to attach my bipod ?
No. The bipod must be attached to the provided attachment point on the rifle, be that a m-lok or keymod fitting or a sling stud or other provided attachment system.
Adding an attachment system is a modification to the rifle and rules 4.1.17 applies.

Can I use one of those ‘Gamer Plates’ after the start signal ?
Unfortunately not. Only a tripod may be attached to the rifle after the start signal.

I have one of those support bags that attaches to the arca rail on my rifle, at what point on a stage am I allowed to attach it ?
Unfortunately, although it’s a bag, it may not be permanently attached to the rifle at any time.
To better clarify ‘permanent’ the basic litmus test is:
If you lift up the rifle and the bag is able to fall free, then it’s not permanent.
If however you have used a quick connect to attach the bag to the arca rail and lifting up the rifle retains the bag, then it’s permanent.

The barrel on my rifle is touching my stock. Can I sand down the stock so that the barrel no longer touches it ?
Unfortunately not, this is beyond 4.1.16 and ‘Removal of Factory Burrs’ and therefore is not permitted.

If I add weights to the scope, it’s not modifying the rifle. Surely that is allowed?
This would be viewed as an attempt to circumvent the Division Rules and would not be permitted.
Any attempt to ‘game’ the Factory Division rules will most likely be declined.

Do I have to use all the parts and accessories supplied with my rifle ?
Accessories: You do not have to use all the accessories provided with your rifle.
Parts: Any removal of any part (functional or not) is a ‘permanent alteration’ to the rifle and therefore rule 4.1.17.1 applies.

If I make a non-permanently attached skid that cradles my rifles fore-end and makes it easier to shoot off barricades, will it be allowed ? It’s not breaking any of the written rules right ?
This is clearly an attempt at ‘gaming’ the Factory Division rules, and it will be declined.
The entire underlying aim of the Factory Division is:

The Factory Division was designed for mainstream rifle manufacturers, and pits manufacturers products against each other on a level playing field.

Any attempt to change the ergonomics (shape, features, weight, etc) of the rifle to gain advantage over the standard factory produced model will not be permitted.

Can I swap out the AR style grip on my rifle for a more upright grip ?
As simple as this seems, it’s regarded as modifying the rifle from the original factory configuration and rule 4.1.17.1 applies.
