hey guys ive been wanting to purchase a more high end rifle. i currently shoot a plain jain remington 700SPS its a regular conture barrel with the standard trigger.
Ive been looking at two different rifles. The new remington 700 XCR tactical and the DMS panther arms LR-308. If any one has had any experence shooting any of these rifles let me know what one of yaw think. to me its not a argument of auto vs bolt just witch would be better sense there about the same price were i live. i shoot georgia-arms 308 match 168gr BT HP

Where do you live, and what distances do you want to shoot? Either of these is perfectly capable. Invest in the best glass you can afford. Nightforce is good, IOR Valdada is better, and Schmidt & Bender will cost you a second mortgage, but you can read a newspaper from 800 yards.
Zeiss is also excellent.
PM me for Schmidt & Bender or IOR Valdada and I can hook you up.

i live in alabama. the longest known yardage ive shoot at so fare is 400 yards. i want to be abile to take good shots at around 800-1,000 if i can find the right stop. this is the gun im currently using a remington 700 SPS with a barska swat scope the whole rig prolly cost about 600. it seems to have problems shooting 168 gr bullets consistenly. i can shoot consitently with lighter rounds. would that have anything to do with the barrel being a standard hunting barrel

Without saying "toss it all out and start over" try a couple things: 1) Try 168's from other manufacturers. 2) Do the ladder test to work up the right load. 3) Don't fall in love with a bullet your rifle doesn't like. 4) Try to get together with someone in your area that shoots long range and can help you out. It sounds like a scope upgrade will definitely be necessary for your new rifle. 5) Try 175's at the longer ranges.
Hope this helps!

i ordered a new rifle this weekend. its the rem 700 SPS varmit. its got a 26 inch heavy varmit barrel with 1/12 twist instead of a light contour with 1/10 twist. its also got a better trigger in it. im gunna go with a leupold MK 4 LR tactical and im gunna get a mcmillian stock to go on it so i think it'll be a little better rig and i think it will handle heavier bullets better than my other one.

Sounds like your going to be in a whole new world with the upgrade. The MK4 will do what you need it to. I've got several and they are good glass and track right. That's more than I can say for a couple IOR's I tried. Total Junk as far as I'm concerned. They say you get what you pay for buying glass but I've got 2 Tasco super sniper scopes that I would take over an IOR any day.
Don't be surprized if that 12 twist won't keep a heavy bullet stabil. I shoot 190 SMK'S through my DPMS .308 with a 10 twist and it loves them. It's a half minute rifle with those but put 168 bullets through it and it's about 1.5.
I use 12 twist 3 groove barrels for guys that are stuck on shooting the 168's but they won't (usually) shoot heavy bullets worth beans. 11 seems to be a good compromise between the two extremes.
Good luck with the new rifle.
Later, Joe
