General Match Description

Come and shoot FUN targets with your favorite rifle!

All proceeds go to the new Augustus Ranch Precision Arms Academy where the event is being held.

This is a great way to practice with your favorite hunting or long range rifle. No special equipment needed - just a rifle and ammo.  You will have the opportunity to shoot a field course with all steel reactive targets and gongs.  Reactive targets are steel targets that move when you hit them.  Distances will be unknown just like when you're out hunting.  You may be asked to shoot from different field positions. The course will be a short 1 1/2 mile hike with up to 7 stops along the way to shoot. You will not be timed so you and your squad will make your way around the course at a walking pace.  We will have provisions for those that are not capable of walking, however it will be limited so please call.

  • Date: June 3rd, 9am

  • Event location: Approx. 2 miles south of the town of Barber on South Barber Road at the Augustus Ranch Precision Arms Academy.  Barber is between Shawmut and Ryegate.  Look for the signs along the roadside.  There is a link to MapQuest on the "directions to the range" FAQ.

  • Calibers: 223 minimum, 300 Ultra max. $45 entry per category.

  • Prizes: Prizes to be awarded by random drawing.

  • Chow: Concessions will be available.  Bring water for during the match.

  • Scoring: Highest number of hits wins per category.

  • Classes: There will be two categories to enter: Hunter class and Precision class. The difference is equipment and target difficulty. You may enter both events if you wish. We may add a junior class if enough are present. (Maybe we’ll even add an “old and blind” class too!)

  • Hunter class: Factory thin contour barrels, hunting style stocks (no prone match rifles!) Bipods OK, no rear bags.  No target knobs on scopes - your usual hunter setup applies here. Two boxes of ammo will be needed (40 rds.)  Distances will be a range of close and medium shots. These will be fun for both beginner hunters and experienced folks too.  Rangefinders OK - although we may limit your possible ranging methods for certain stations (mil or swag).  Most targets about 2 moa with a max range of about 500 yds.

  • Precision class: Anything goes subject to the caliber limitations so our steel doesn’t get holes punched in it. You must be able to transport your equipment by yourself.  Three boxes of ammo will be needed (60 rds). Distances will be a wide range.  There will be unknown distances - possibly different ranging methods too - so come prepared.  Most targets 2 moa down to 1/2 moa at times.  Ranges to 1200 yds.  The 1200 yard targets are large, don't worry.  Rangefinders OK, although you may have to mil or swag some target ranges to keep it "interesting."

Other stuff:  This year we are doing "gentleman's timing" - you will have a fixed amount of time to range and shoot your targets at each position.  Time starts when you are standing in the shooting area and it's your turn.  This is needed to keep the match moving on pace.  You will have reasonable time to take care of business, just not all day.  Just like the real world. Wink
